The In-Betweens / Alison James

The In-Betweens analyzes the creation, storage, and recollection of Alison James’ episodic memories. Five emotional, unnerving animations loop within the gallery, and are installed alongside the tactile, intricate sets and frames used to make them, offering insight into their creation and encouraging reflection upon the memory making process.

An Index of Sorts / Rachel Livedalen

An Index of Sorts is an installation of screeprinted paper forming a grid-like design across the walls of the gallery.  Within the grid pattern are groupings of framed works on paper and printed fabric panels blending Greco-Roman art historic references with contemporary culture.

We thought the environment was frozen in time. It is now a slow emergency.

Vicissitude is a 120 sq metre silkscreened floor cloth that depicts the various impacts on the earth from climate change; flood, fire, erosion and drought that can be walked on by viewers. The ceiling is covered in thousands of silkscreened butterflies.

A volar entre rocas / Mariana Muñoz Gomez

A volar entre rocas is an intimate processing of self and relation to place, considerations brought up alongside questions about land, place, and power. The exhibition compares and contrasts experiences and knowledge around the artist’s two homes, exploring feelings of diaspora including considerations of memory, movement, reaching, and belonging.

This series shares the emotions of immigration and disconnection during tough times. The internet blackout in my home country kept my messages from reaching loved ones. Living between worlds, the dead flowers signify delayed love. Each bloom represents unspoken moments in my family’s life. Messages on prints echo my struggle to express feelings in that difficult time

NO SHOW : a group exhibition

No Show’ is about building and restoring resilience in our community – past, present, and future. Exhibitions are called ‘shows’, and the parallel between the concept of a ‘No Show’ (not showing up, being missing) is a call to all of those who feel on the fringes of the art community. SNAP is pleased to present Threshold. This exhibition is the culmination of works from this years Emerging Artists in Residence: Ambar Azcorra, Cynthia Schroter, Libbie Farrell, and Sam Schembri.

We have been so lucky to share space with these artists over the last year and watch each of them grow into their practice. The exhibition ahead is an exciting pairing of techniques, approaches, and ideas that have been thoughtfully explored and engaged with.

Carbon Generations / Alex R.M Thompson

Carbon Generations is a toy block petrofantasia in miniature. Recasting waste material as educational plaything, this exhibition points to construction-themed children’s media and connects their narratives to the normalization of dominant worldviews. Fossil fuel-intensive industry, sanitizing characters like Bob the Builder, and the threat of shifting climate inform the work.

Traversing the line, with no fixed point / Briana Palmer

Oct 19 - Nov 16

Briana’s practice includes print media, sculpture, and installation, which reflects an intersection between, perception, experience, and social ideologies as euro-settler in Canada. Her work is a continuum of questions and explorations that challenges the impact of colonialisms and systems of oppression which continues to govern the landscape of Canada.
