Emerging Artist in Residence / SNAP

This program provides a new environment and stimulates artists to expand their artistic practice into a cohesive and professional body of work.

A person sitting at a cluttered desk writing in a notebook, with art and sketches hanging on the wall behind them in a dimly lit room.

The culmination of each awarded residency is an exhibition opportunity. Each artist will have an opportunity to show the work that was made during their time at SNAP. This is a great way to encourage making and to celebrate each artist and their professional contributions to our community. The exhibition will occur at SNAP within 6 months of the end of the EAiR program.

This residency is a self-directed opportunity intended for folks with intermediate printmaking experience. Artists should be engaging with media with which they have some hands-on familiarity,  or seeking out mentorship opportunities before or during the early stages of their time at SNAP. If you have any questions about your eligibility, please reach out to communications@snapartists.com.

NOTE: The residency provides a rent-free studio space however monthly supply fees and consumables are the responsibility of the artist.

Who is an emerging artist?

Emerging Artists are defined as those, of any age, who have mastered the basic techniques of their art form through education or apprenticeship and are in the early years of launching a professional career. Emerging artists have created a modest body of independent work and are ready for the next steps in their artistic development.

Residency term?

The four-month residency must take place between September of the year of acceptance and September of the following year.

Selection Process:

A panel of arts-centred professionals will select successful applicants based on the artistic merit and clarity of the application, the suitability of the project for SNAP facilities, as well as the impact the residency will have on the artist’s practice and the perceived potential impact of the artist on our community.

SNAP is committed to fostering accessible and equitable artistic opportunities. All qualified persons are encouraged to apply. We especially encourage and welcome applications from members of equity-seeking communities, including Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour, people with disabilities, members of LGBTQ2S+ communities, and others with skills and knowledge to engage productively with diverse communities.
