Land in the Veins surveys the landscape of open skies and industry, flag-shipped by the evocative poetry of Mary Pinkoski.

Alyson Davies’ cyanotype work is influenced by the sights and history of the local landscape. Her prints feature environments familiar to Alberta – prairie lakes, forest, skies, agricultural fields, and mountains. The attention to individual plant species symbolizes historic events associated to the land and to her experiences growing up in a rural agricultural family. Old World flora sneaks into the most unlikely places as we celebrate a successful crop of Canola, “double low” rapeseed. Davies creates a space that is both magical and menacing – the figures inhabiting the land grin as tears flow from their bodies into the landscape, they reach for connection.

Bringing together poet and visual artist, the exhibition depicts a universe searching for balance in which we are confronted by our current ecological system. The production of this exhibition is indebted to the peoples before who kept and changed this land into what we know it as today. We acknowledge that the research, collection of imagery, and specific historical events referenced took place on Treaty 7, Treaty 8 and Treaty 6 lands. We are all treaty people.
