Artist Micheline Durocher says about her work: “In my photos I embrace the inherent theatricality of objects. Banal objects and consumer goods appear both as props and actors. I have this passion for objects. I am an active scavenger of high and low culture who often takes things out of context and out of their original function. By repurposing, and redisplaying these objects and establishing new interactions through the camera lens I look for new meanings and relationships in the stuff that we consume. My work takes the broader feelings of everyday life, and puts them into an aesthetic perspective.”

Bio

Micheline Durocher was born in Montréal, Canada. She works nomadically picking up traces from chosen locations to create her projects with materials found on-site. Her most recent residencies include Assets for Artists at MassMoca in Massachusetts, USA and East Side International in Los Angeles. Both were completed in 2016. Screenings of her videos include Cartografias Corporales: cycle de video performance, Mexico city (2016), Festival des Cinémas différents et expérimentaux, Paris (2012), Mecal Short Film Festival, Barcelona (2012), Optica, Madrid (2011), Northside DIY FilmmakingBrooklyn (2011), Les rendez-vous du cinéma québécois (2010), Antimatter, Victoria (2008), EJECT 2 – Segundo Festival de Videoperformance de la Ciudad de Mexico, Mexico (2008), Images Festival, Toronto (2007). Her video Lapse was awarded Official Selection at the Festival des Cinémas expérimentaux et différents, Paris, France. She was also awarded finalist, Oboro / Georges Laoun Prize for Short video, Montréal, Canada. Lapse (version 1) was awarded “Official Selection” at the Sydney Underground Film Festival, Australia. Selected one person exhibitions include Gallery 44 (Toronto); Centre Vu (Quebec); Open Studio (Toronto) among others. Her work is included in the collections of The Canada Council, The National Library of Canada and le Musée National des beaux-arts du Québec, Prêt d’oeuvre d’art, Québec, and private, corporate collections.
