Construct

Construct is an exhibition of new works by SNAP’s 2017 Emerging Artist in Residence, Carly Greene.

Memory is built in pieces: assembled layer upon layer, each piece leading to others until we reach a sense of completeness, a progression of time. I am interested in what happens when the layers are disrupted, destroyed, or left unfinished. Using construction materials and objects as reference points, I deconstruct, adapt, replicate, and rebuild until the materials surpass their original qualities or purpose. Like memories, my sculptures, drawings and prints, are themselves a series of approximations; elements assembled out of context; a collection of incomplete thoughts.

My work is about the imperfection of memory explored through material, structure, and space. Drawing on experience working with and alongside people living with cognitive conditions such as Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia has lead me to question the role of memory and its significance to situating ourselves within the context of our own lives.

This exhibition bridges the mediums of sculpture, print, and drawing in an attempt to find avenues of expressing the sometimes poignant, sometimes absurd inconsistencies of individual memory.

Bio
Carly Greene is an emerging visual artist from Edmonton, Alberta. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Alberta where she graduated with distinction in 2012 with a focus on sculpture, drawing, and installation. Since leaving university Greene has maintained an active studio practice, working collaboratively and independently on exhibitions and transitory public art projects. She has completed internships at Franconia Sculpture Park (Minnesota, 2011) and Creative Practices (Edmonton, 2015), and residencies at The Ortona Armoury (Edmonton, 2015) and SNAP Gallery and Printshop (Edmonton, 2017). She recently held her first solo exhibition at the Bleeding Heart Art Space in Edmonton and is currently the Sculpture Studio Practicum at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity (Banff, 2018).
