Artist Statement: I’ve spent a lot of time asking questions about the corporate world and the mistrust surrounding it. Beginning as a printmaker in art school, I now work as a graphic designer, where I make commercial art for the companies that I mistrusted in the first place. I got subtly drawn into the heart of the corporate world that I had ironically worked so hard to stay away from. However, in some way, we all belong to this corporate mechanism as long as we live and work in this economy. Our roles within this mechanism are not static either, as we constantly shift and occupy different places – even fulfilling multiple roles at the same time. We are producers and consumers, packagers and packaged, sellers and items to be sold, branders and branded. The printed buildings I’ve created become the metaphor for these dualities. They occupy a space that is both city and package in order to pull the viewer into these paradoxical positions. We can imagine ourselves as occupants as well as purchasers of this environment, while the ads on the walls attempt to persuade us to buy in. I think we are left asking – what are we really being sold? Perhaps it is the idea itself, eloquently wrapped; a brand stretched over a folded framework; a mechanism poised to collapse in on itself. – Jennifer Konanz SNAP is happy to provide this programming at no cost to participants.
