Introduction to Natural Dyeing: Online Workshop with Visiting Artist Francesca Carella Arefingo
During this weekend natural dyeing workshop, Artist Francesca Carella Arefingo will show you the magic of colour extraction from waste products. This online workshop is designed for those in search of an accessible entry point to natural dyeing on plant-based fibres and requires no previous experience.
You will learn basic safety considerations for dyeing, the difference between plant and animal fibers and how to prepare each of them, and how to dye using two different methods. Learn to identify dyestuffs that can be gathered from your own kitchen scraps, from friends and neighbours, or from local businesses. Become familiar with common dye plants that can be found in the urban environments and learn how to forage ethically and sustainably. Dye a variety of fabrics (cellulose-based fibres only) and garments (take a dig through your closet!) by using waste and turning it into gold.
The experiments in this workshop will enable your own self guided exploration moving forward by providing the basic knowledge you need and a list of resources to continue your studies in natural dyeing.
*No experience is necessary, this class is recommended for beginner and intermediate artists. All ability levels are encouraged to register.
Note: All online sessions will be recorded to capture the demonstration and will be sent to registered participants so they can view and rewatch at their leisure after the session.
