In-person course held at SNAP

Learn this popular printmaking technique, which can transform any drawing into graphic and colourful prints. This six-week course is your chance to learn how to transfer images onto screens, make stencils, mix inks and layer colours, register images, and print your final images. Students will create multiple colour images and print on paper while learning safe studio procedures from Artist Graeme Dearden. This course will prepare you with the skills necessary to create your own prints and to independently use the silkscreen facilities at SNAP. You will come away with prints from a spontaneous print exercise, two final print projects full of colourful layers exploring analogue and digital stencil making as well as a print exchange with your fellow classmates.

*Please note this course is for creating screen prints onto paper and does not include instruction in printing on fabrics.

*No experience is necessary, this course is recommended for beginner and intermediate artists. All ability levels are encouraged to register.

About the artist

Graeme Dearden is an Albertan fine artist and writer working primarily in printmaking, drawing, and visual poetry. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2015, majoring in glass. He has produced fine art prints for numerous Albertan artists and has work collected by The Alberta Foundation For The Arts.

He has been silkscreening since 2009 and worked professionally as a silkscreen printer and lab technician for five years at Goldray Industries in Calgary. Here, he specialized in silkscreen prepress/printing for architectural decorative glass, as well as colour matching and production of silkscreen enamel and glass paint. Previous to this, Graeme worked as a garment printer for slow-pitch apparel.

Additionally, Graeme taught silkscreen and served in numerous board governance positions through the Alberta Printmaker’s Society for three years.
